Effect of deuterium concentration of drinking water on glucose metabolism

Beyond the basic experience that depletion of D2O has anti-mitotic effect in various tumor cells, certain clinical observations also suggested that deuterium depletion can alter glucose metabolism in diabetic patients.

The effect of deuterium concentration of drinking water on the glucose metabolism was tested in sreptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat model. The experiment verified the relation between the D concentration of drinking water and blood glucose level. The measured parameters were significantly lower in animals receiving lower D2O containing drinking water and insulin treatment. DDW decreased the blood glucose concentration of the experimental animals in presence of insulin, thus it can be assumed that deuterium depletion potentiates the effect of insulin and this way improves the glucose uptake of the cells.

The mode of action of D2O depletion is not fully understood and further experiments are ongoing to elucidate this question.
